Chester-
Looking forward to your new CD. What selections will be on it.
BTW, do you still have your Alex CC you used with Boston? I know you had a Getzen at your Eastman masterclass 2 years ago--what horns are you using now, and on the CD?

Mark, great to hear from you! Did some opera arias. Was a great time. Editing is taking place now. My son Jonathan is a recording engineer, so I get low rates....
Yes, I still have my Alex...it's a great sounding horn! Use it occasionally. Also have all of my horns, still and play orchestra quite a bit. Used the B & S much on the CD, and also euphonium, and ......?

What is your story now? Fill me in. You can do an email also, if you wish. All the best. And much more to come on the site, but I am traveling right now. Chester

Hi Chester-
Looking forward to hearing youor CD--opera arias should be terrific. Glad you still have and use your Alex.
I still fill in for Don, free lance up here, and have been doing volunteer work for folks with problems-I really enjoy that.
I currently have a 1958 Alex CC, a 1960 Mirafone CC, and a 6v goldbrass Firebird F.
Forgot to ask you--what model B & S F do you have--if I remember, it is rose brass, but can't remember the model.
Thanks again.

Sir,

Your playing is a constant inspiration to me. I continue to find out of print recordings that thrill my ears. Thank you for your many years of excellent music making, and for encouraging this tuba player to try and sound like you.

I look forward to your CD and this blog.

Sincerely,

Chester-
I just acquired a vintage Alexander 6 valve F tuba, and it got me wondering about some of your BSO recordings. I especially love the Berlioz Romeo & Juliet you did--did you use an Alex F on that or was it your B & S F? If it was an Alex F, did you use a 5 or 6 valve? Do you still use it? The sound on that Berlioz recording you did is just amazing.
Thanks!

Hello, Robert. Good to hear from you. The sound on some of those analog L.P.'s is very good. Stay in touch. Hope all is well. Chester

Hey Mark.....I'm traveling right now, and cannot recall which tuba I used. Is this a Sejii O. recording? Can you see a date? Is your new Alex 6-valve regular or goldbrass? Chester

Hi Chester-
I'll check the recording and see if they list a date. I was with Ozawa. My Alex 6v F is yellow brass, but extremely thin--came from a player (as I am told) who played in Berlin orchestra--and just after-late '40's-WWII--very thin metal, but what a gorgeous sound. Rotors casings seem to be gold brass--it is in great shape and plays sweet.
I so admire your F tuba playing on the BSO recordings-just such a beautiful sound that you make.
Regards-
mark

Your are inspiration to all of us. your sound quality is model for many of us to follow.
i remember watching the broadcast of boston pops on PBS every sunday nights during my high school years.
even though, i never had the chance to study with you. Those concerts were private lessons in on how easy it is to play when you got everything working.

Hello Chester,
The CD is wonderful. It stands as a testament to your God-given talent.

As a former student, I think the tuba community would like your thoughts on musicianship, ensemble playing, DC and BSO experiences, favorite conductors, playing well as one ages and so on.

All the best to you and your family.
